Profile Information

What is your personal relationship to or connection with mindfulness?
When I was 17 years old, I thought I had life all figured out. Until one day, my whole world came crashing down in front of me. During that difficult time, my parents thought it would be a good idea for me to seek help from a psychologist. Once a week, I would go see my psychologist and we would practice mindfulness. With time, mindfulness taught me to gain more control over my emotions and to be acceptant of how things are by living in the present moment, instead of worrying about the future.

My love for mindfulness led me to Saint Paul University, where I study Human Relations and Spirituality. Now in my last semester, I have gained a lot of knowledge about spirituality and mindfulness practice. Upon graduating from University, I wish to become an addictions counselor and to incorporate meditation and mindfulness into addiction treatment in order to enhance recovery.

Coming back to the present, I am currently working at Youth Net, a bilingual by youth for youth mental health promotion program at CHEO. In light of spirituality, Youth Net is launching its very first mindfulness program for youth! In order to provide this program to our community, I am engaged in a two level mindfulness training program called: Mindfulness Without Borders.

In my opinion, youth can greatly benefit from a mindfulness program. Mindfulness practice can reduce stress, anxiety, fear and negative emotions. With time, I think that mindfulness practice can lead to a better mental health. Looking back on my experience as a teenager, I can say that spirituality empowered me as a person, and saved my life. I would love nothing more than to share my experience with youth, and to possibly show them how mindfulness can better their lives, just like it bettered mine.
What is your professional work? As this is a mindfulness-based professional's network we require each member to disclose his or her profession (i.e. teacher, psychotherapist, MD, lawyer, etc.)
I am currently a fourth year student enrolled at Saint Paul University studying Human Relations and Spirituality. I also work at Youth Net, a for youth by youth mental health organisation.
Using mindfulness-based techniques in professional work
In past courses, I have learnt a lot about various mindfulness-based techniques such as ACT and meditation.
