Profile Information

What is your personal relationship to or connection with mindfulness?
I have studied meditation and energy healing since 1996. I am a reiki master teacher, I have been trained in Therapeutic Touch as well as shamanic drumming and healing. I am a drum maker. I am also a pilgrim and I have walked the Camino de Santiago twice, which has been my greatest experience of walking mindfulness meditation, and one which I seek to continue in an ongoing way as my pilgrimage through this life continues. I am interested in working with children by starting a "mindfulness camp" in Ottawa. I have been living here for a year and would like to join Mindfulness Ottawa and make some new contacts in the community.
What is your professional work? As this is a mindfulness-based professional's network we require each member to disclose his or her profession (i.e. teacher, psychotherapist, MD, lawyer, etc.)
I am a Full Professor of Sociology at King's University College at Western University in London, where I have been on faculty since 1988. I am currently approaching retirement and living in Ottawa while on leave from my position. I am planning to retire in Ottawa and would like to start networking for the next phase of my life. I have taught meditation for many years as part of my healing practice.
Using mindfulness-based techniques in professional work
In April 2016 I gave a workshop on Mindfulness Meditation and Mental Health at the Young Researchers' conference at the Royal Ottawa. Lynda Pedley, who does iRest meditation here in Ottawa, led a group iRest session for the second half of the session. It was there that I met Dr. Andra Smith.

I recently completed the Advanced Training in Mindfulness Meditation: A Holistic Clinical Approach with Stephane Bensoussan in Montreal.

My experience as a university professor for over 35 years has taught me how generalized anxiety is in the student body and how the experience can be deadening for university students who suffer from its paralyzing effects. I would like to see more opportunities for drop-in sessions for students at our local universities and colleges. I have also wanted to create a "Mindfulness Camp" for children in the summer. I have some great ideas for exposing kids to subtle energies as well as giving them the tools for managing stress in their lives. I do believe the Dalai Lama when he says that if all children learn to meditate by the age of 8 we will witness the end of war. To me this is a worthy use of time and energy. I am currently unable to accept payment for my work as I am on medical leave, but I am actively volunteering and would like to get involved with like-minded others. In my personal life, I have found mindfulness invaluable in dealing with the stresses associated with my professional position as well as everyday life.
