- What is your personal relationship to or connection with mindfulness?
- My dharma name is Compassionate Awakening of the Heart. Mindfulness meditation, compassion and buddhist devotional chanting make up some of the threads of my spiritual practice which informs my professional work as a registered clinical health psychologist. In mindfulness practice I emphasize warm, connected presence within and without, including our connection with the living natural world.
I am a current student of the buddhist teachers Kittisaro and Thanissara (Sacred Mountain Sangha) and Mark Coleman (Spirit Rock, Awake in the Wild). I believe the transformative effects of meditation are most available when integrated deeply into personal development, lifestyle ethics, and supported by loving extended participation in a nourishing mindful community.
I was first introduced to mindfulness practice in my doctoral residency at in their innovative Behavioral Health program which acutally employed a zen teacher at the University of Texas at Austin Student Health Service!
I teach mindful self compassion and mindfulness daylong and five day retreats in nature annually, as well as offering mindfulness integrated psychological services through Ottawa River Psychology Group. My own practice includes regular annual extended silent retreats of 10-30 days as well as daily mindful movement in nature: hiking, skiing, and mindful trail running in Gatineau Park, and rowing on the Ottawa River.
- What is your professional work? As this is a mindfulness-based professional's network we require each member to disclose his or her profession (i.e. teacher, psychotherapist, MD, lawyer, etc.)
- I am a PhD registered psychologist (CPO #4531 - you might find me under my married name Kimberly van Walsum) and mindfulness/mindful self compassion teacher in full time private practice in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Many of my clients come to me for evidence-based services that are grounded in Western science that explores the application of mindfulness and compassion practices in western psychotherapy.
I was first introduced to mindfulness practice in my doctoral residency in Behavioral Health at the University of Texas at Austin Student Health Service. In 2004 I completed the 9 day professional training in MBSR with Jon Kabat Zinn and Saki Santorelli. I have taught MBSR at UT-Austin, Texas A&M College of Medicine, Alberta Children's Hospital, in private practice, and at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group in Ottawa. While at ACH I co-developed an contemplative arts program for children with Dr. Christine Korol of www.therapyworks.ca. At the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, where I served as Chief of Psychology, I facilitated the introduction of MBSR for Health Care Professionals, monthly Mindfulness Research and Practice breakfasts, and was first author on the first Royal research project on the effects of mindfulness practice on burnout and self compassion in health care professionals. I continue to grow as a mindful psychologist through my own practice and through embracing the challenge of how to bring a creative, loving mind to training in ACT, CFT, MBCT, and Maudsley FBT.
I currently integrate mindfulness, compassion and buddhist psychology into my individual psychotherapy work, including CFT, ACT and mindfulness integrated treatments, with adults suffering from burnout, depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, health problems, and pain. One area of practice where I notice particular joy is the application of mindfulness practices to the high intensity situations encountered by athletes, executives, and other high performance professionals. I love teaching doctors, and am very happily occupied spreading mindfulness within the medical community in Ottawa.

- Using mindfulness-based techniques in professional work
- I currently incorporate mindfulness and compassion-based techniques in my professional work through the use of third wave CBT techniques such as CFT, MiCBT, DBT, MBCT, and ACT therapies.
Our practice hosts the local Compassion Focused Therapy Self Practice and Self Reflection group for professionals, and participates in ACBS Ottawa. I am a board member of ACBS Ontario and participate in the Canadian Network for Compassion Focused Therapy.
In 2020 we are excited to host the Psychology of Compassion and Transformation Series featuring Deirdre Fay, MSW & CFT Trainer, Kelly Wilson, ACT co-founder, and Kristin Neff, Mindful Self Compassion founder.
Mindfulness Ottawa is a new community dedicated to bringing together professionals who are interested in the practice of mindfulness.
