What is your personal relationship to or connection with mindfulness?
Over the past 20 years, I practiced various meditation techniques and yoga practices but was first introduced to formal mindfulness practices in 2015. Over the past year, my focus has been on creating a pilot project that studies the impact of a mindfulness-based parenting course designed to support parents of children with special needs. I am grateful for what I have learned on this journey as this new approach to life has helped me handle the unique needs of my two children with autism. Now I hope to help others mindfully approach their own and their child's individual needs.
What is your professional work? As this is a mindfulness-based professional's network we require each member to disclose his or her profession (i.e. teacher, psychotherapist, MD, lawyer, etc.)
I am the founder of Therapeutic Innovations International, LLC and after 15 years of providing occupational therapy services to children around the world, I decided to return to school to pursue my doctorate in occupational therapy at Chatham University. My capstone project will be implemented in September 2018 and will investigate the effectiveness of a 6-week mindfulness-based parent educational training program in decreasing parental stress for parents of children with special needs. I moved to Ottawa in August of 2017 and am grateful for the opportunity to meet other professionals with similar passions.
Using mindfulness-based techniques in professional work
I feel incorporating mindfulness practices into parenting practices can significantly impact the family dynamics. I have two boys with high functioning autism, and I know how mindfulness practices and parenting classes have positively impacted our family. The focus of my services has shifted from direct child-based interventions to working with the parents. The intention is to empower parents with the tools to mindfully support their children with special needs while tending to their well-being.
