Profile Information

What is your personal relationship to or connection with mindfulness?
My dharma name is Compassionate Awakening of the Heart. Mindfulness practices, both formal and informal, make up some of the threads that connect my lived experience into the web of common humanity. In mindfulness, I am nourished by the interconnectedness we all share with the living world. As a healer and a psychologist, I have learned how important it is to stay grounded, and connected to sources of nourishment as we go about the work of nourishing and awakening the world.

I have taken the Five Mindfulness Trainings as part of the worldwide Order of Interbeing with teacher Thich Nhat Hanh and intend to live what I teach, on every level of being. It is my observation that mindfulness is most powerful when integrated deeply into the lifestyle of the practitioner and when supported by a nourishing mindful community; besides my professional community, I am part of the Pine Gate and Pagoda Sanghas in Ottawa and intend to integrate the ethics of mindfulness into all of life. Right now I am having fun playing with the first paramita of dhana, or generosity. I love finding new ways to be generous with every moment!

I was first introduced to mindfulness practice in my doctoral residency at in their innovative Behavioral Health program which acutally employed a zen teacher at the University of Texas at Austin Student Health Service! Since that time I have maintained a personal practice of meditation, yoga, and mindful movement and have completed 5-7 day intensive practice retreats annually.

I encounter teachers in each and every client I support through a process of challenge, healing and transformation. My most demanding teachers are three little Buddhas who love swordfighting, lego, and dressing up in capes. My adult teachers are Pema Chodron, Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzberg, Frank Jude Boccio, and Shinzen Young among others.

I notice mindfulness practice for me blossoms in extended retreat and while engaged in mindful movement in nature: hiking in the wilderness, skiing, doing yoga, trail running, and mindful rowing on open rivers.
What is your professional work? As this is a mindfulness-based professional's network we require each member to disclose his or her profession (i.e. teacher, psychotherapist, MD, lawyer, etc.)
I am a PhD registered psychologist (CPO #4531 you might find me under my married name Kimberly van Walsum) and yoga teacher (200 hr RYT) in full time private practice in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Many of my clients come to me for evidence-based services that are grounded in the mindfulness tradtions.

I was first introduced to mindfulness practice in my doctoral residency in Behavioral Health at the University of Texas at Austin Student Health Service. In 2004 I completed the 9 day professional training in MBSR with Jon Kabat Zinn and Saki Santorelli. I have taught MBSR at UT-Austin, Texas A&M College of Medicine, Alberta Children's Hospital, in private practice, and at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group in Ottawa. While at ACH I co-developed an contemplative arts program for children with Dr. Christine Korol of www.therapyworks.ca. At the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, where I served as Chief of Psychology, I facilitated the introduction of MBSR for Health Care Professionals, monthly Mindfulness Research and Practice breakfasts, and was first author on the first Royal research project on the effects of mindfulness practice on burnout and self compassion in health care professionals. I continue to grow as a mindful psychologist through my own practice and through embracing the challenge of how to bring a creative, loving mind to training in ACT, MBCT, and Maudsley FBT.

I currently integrate mindfulness into my individual psychotherapy work, including ACT and MBCT treatment, with adolescents and adults suffering from depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, health problems, and pain. One area of practice where I notice particular joy is the application of mindfulness practices to the high intensity situations encountered by athletes, executives, and other high performance professionals. I love teaching doctors, and am very happily occupied spreading mindfulness within the medical community in Ottawa.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at info@drsogge.com telephone 613-656-3331 or refer those who may benefit to www.drsogge.com
Using mindfulness-based techniques in professional work
I currently incorporate mindfulness-based techniques in my professional work through the use of third wave CBT techniques such as MiCBT, DBT, MBCT, and ACT therapies. I am also a certified MBSR teacher and and a yoga teacher (RYT 200hrs) and a student of the Class of 2016 Spirit Rock Mindfulness Meditation and Yoga Teacher program (500 RT) directed by Ann Cushman and Will Kabat-Zinn. YOu can learn about it here http://www.spiritrock.org/.

I look forward to practicing among you and with you.
