Event Description

This workshop will give participants a taste of what mindful self-compassion is, by offering some of the elements of the empirically supported 8-week MSC program created by Kristen Neff and Christopher Germer. MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable participants to respond to difficult moment in their lives with kindness, care and understanding. 
Self-compassion can be learned by anyone, even those who were not modeled compassion in their childhood or who feel uncomfortable when they are good to themselves. It’s a courageous attitude that stands up to harm, including the harm that we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism, self-isolation, or self-absorption. Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience allowing us to befriend our shortcomings, motivate ourselves with kindness, forgive ourselves when needed, relate wholeheartedly to others, and be more authentically ourselves.
What to expect:
MSC is primarily a compassion training program rather than mindfulness training, although mindfulness is the foundation of self-compassion. MSC is also not psychotherapy in that it emphasizes building emotional resources rather than addressing old wounds. Beneficial change occurs naturally as we develop the capacity to be with ourselves in a kinder, more compassionate way.
The three-hour program will combine meditation practices and exercises, short talks and group discussion. Participants will leave the workshop having enough skill to begin a self-compassion practice of their own. They will also receive a guided recording for home practice. Some of the themes and learnings that will emerge during this workshop include: 
- what is self-compassion?
- what is mindfulness? 
- the physiology of self-compassion and self-criticism
- self-compassion and self-esteem
- discover experientially through a variety of practices the link between self-compassion and well-being
- self-compassion skills and tools to draw upon during times when you need it most 
Pre-requisites:
No previous meditation or mindfulness experience is necessary, but it is helpful.
