Event Description

This is a couples workshop for mental health professionals that will teach you how to integrate ACT and the matrix with attachment-informed strategies in a way that can help your couples understand their distress through the lens of psychological flexibility and recognize their negative cycles and stuck loops as their enemy. Using a combination of mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies along with focusing our work around deeper emotional vulnerabilities and attachment needs, we have developed an ACT approach that helps couples connect with their relationship values, reconnect with each other even in the presence of discomfort, and become quickly able to act like the partners they want to be, no matter what. This workshop will be based on therapy processes rather than a rigid protocol. You will also walk away with practical tools, specially designed worksheets, and richly illustrated clinical vignettes that can enrich your practice.

We will explore how training psychological flexibility from the perspective of attachment can empower and bring to life your work with couples.

By the end of this workshop, you will learn:

  • An overview of the ACT model of psychological flexibility
  • An understanding of the similarities and differences between an ACT approach for couples and other attachment-based models for couples therapy (e.g. EFT)
  • ACT case conceptualization for couples (framework for integrating a model of psychological flexibility with attachment theory)
  • Our 3 Strategy approach to ACT couples work: 1- Uncovering Stuck Loops; 2-Rising above conflict to reconnect; 3- Becoming the partner you want to be
  • Strategies for problem-solving “stuck situations” with couples using process-based interventions
